KLIMTcity emerges creating a new sheltered, natural, social building and an ecological city experience.
Vienna, a totally contemporary city, must face the suburban challenge as its main bet in the long run. Over the last centuries, the city has been extending outwards following a suburban design which has led to a "non-city" layout. Kagram is a key example of this phenomenon. We find three different urban models here: uni-familiar sprawl, big isolated blocks and a car-based shopping type (which fills a study area). City life is completely missing. The suburb has morphed into an "anti-city" urbanism model that has eradicated any kind of urban life making these areas a design which has absolutely failed in terms of society, ecology, identity and landscaping.
This Kagram site manifests all this evidence and constitutes a clear "non-place" suburban prototype, reinforced by a large-scale commercial monoculture. In addition, this site remains absolutely determined by two big infrastructures that isolate the area from its surroundings. Heavy train tracks and a highway call for an urgent acoustic solution. Besides, the large-scale commercial buildings' current placement would dramatically interfere with any further compatible urban development. The project should try to be sensitive to this absolutely rigid urban structure and aim to incorporate it into future growth.

Over thousands of years, the Viennese territory anthropization has been at the heart of their incredible economic, cultural, social and urban development. The extensive field exploitation system has long since been stored in the Viennese subconscious. Somehow the city, architecture, culture, art and Viennese design have been impregnated by this "hidden" DNA Viennese pattern that we like to call the "Klimt code". This complex code will be used as an operating system that will lead us to the fascinating and difficult task of creating Kagram's new urbanity and identity.
As archeologists, we have unearthed traces of historical Kagram sites. We have found an amazing discovery that unveils the right way to plow up the new Kagram urban development. Acting as architectural farmers now, we will gradually cultivate back all those plots by planting the "Klimt-city" seeds there. This new urban model will hopefully continue to populate Kagram with a new social, ecological and cultural landscape and a lively urban experience for its citizens.
Klimtcity also adapts to its territorial conditions. The new Klimt fabric should be integrated into heavy site swiss made conditions. The fabric is molded and cut out by a precise urban- and acoustic-adaptive topography. This shape will shelter Klimtcity from external noise pollution by creating a new inner-city oasis including plenty of diverse urban premises. From outside, a new cultivated hilly landscape will emerge from Viennese fields plain, like in Kalhenberg's vineyard hills. A new identity arises at Kagram, and it also offers a great chance to bring a former farming experience back to the new contemporary citizen's lifestyle.
A new identity for a new urbanity.

The urban and social fabric.
From inside, a completely new lively city experience.
Klimtcity aims to build a lively diverse city fabric. The new urban mesh will be cut out by an advanced hilly shape that will mold it under a wide range of different spatial, social, programmatic perceptions and ecological aspects.
As a result, we'll get a lively inter-connected dense and intense sequence of dedicated public spaces. The Klimtcity is based on people's experience. Therefore, the pedestrian network takes precedence over the car routes. It will also interact with bicycles and other vehicle networks that will guarantee a comfortable inner mobility and outward accessibility. From the main roads, cars can descend into basement parking lots. In addition, some restricted traffic lanes will be suitably distributed where necessary. Cars are not the enemy but they won't be the major figures anymore. Additionally, the new tramline stop will irrigate and reinforce this new pedestrian leadership.
In terms of uses, Klimtcity doesn't believe in mono-functionality. From a high density housing predominance, we propose a wide range of social, cultural, educational, sporting and administrative offices and commercial uses within the community. In short, from the inside we propose a whole new, lively city experience.
Klimtcity pledges its commitment to the high standards of eco-efficiency and is profoundly aware if its ecological footprint. We strongly believe in high-density developments as the foundation of any sustainable design. The project aims at cutting down energy loss and obtaining the largest amount of energy at a low cost, using passive energy systems.
The design implements several sustainable policies, i.e. sunlight optimization, high standard building insulation, two façade flats with greenhouse loggia, the use of basements as cold-warm interchangers for building thermal conditioning, green roofs as an extensive C02 fixing, 02 generator and sewage purification' Furthermore, Klimtcity also understands ecology on a much deeper level. According to Felix Guattari's "ecosophy" principles, we would like to upgrade the environmental experience to a social and mental level. In order to do this, we will make use of communal rooftops by building urban orchards on them, thereby increasing public awareness of their environment as well as enhancing their collective living experience.

The orchard typology: a diverse and natural new lifestyle.
Klimtcity believes in housing diversity but would also like to turn living in Kagran into a one of a kind experience.
With this in mind, we developed a specific typology. Kagran site has been part of Vienna's crop fields for ages. We would like to introduce that experience also to every home in several ways. On the one hand, the distribution of houses will be plowed up through strips in the same way as another crop plot. We will also add a two-façade orchard space that will concentrate all the public uses into a big iwc replica continuous space, flanked on each side by green loggias/greenhouses. The crop experience is returning. The orchard space will act as a home core and connect life experience outwards by two big-glazed openings .
Also Klimtcity offers a wide diversity of dwellings: the site is covered by different types and sizes of dwellings. An intrinsic section variation generates a project with 3 main typologies: horizontal flats, patio housing (linked to hillsides) and duplex penthouses. This typology also allows a wide range of sizes, from 2 bedrooms to even more than 5 bedrooms for large families, although the most common are those with 3 and 4 bedrooms (D and C types) creating a truly diverse and natural new lifestyle.
